A78: Car crashes on to beach from carriageway near Inverkip
Police rushed to the one-car accident at 9:20pm last night, with Coastguard teams from Greenock, Largs and Ardrossan being called to assist. Largs RNLI crew also attended the scene to carry out an inshore search of the area, as it was not yet known if anyone else had been in the car. The A78 was closed to all traffic for several hours following the incident.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Around 9.20pm on Tuesday, 2 January, 2024, police were called to a report of a road crash involving one car on Main Road between Inverkip and Wemyss Bay. Officers attended and the road was closed. “The male driver was taken by Ambulance to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.
“The road was reopened and enquiries continue.” A Coastguard spokesperson added: “Coastguard Rescue Teams from Largs, Greenock and Ardrossan assisted Police Scotland respond to a car with two people inside which left the road onto the beach at Inverkip on 2 January. “Scottish Fire and Rescue Service extracted one person from the vehicle.
“The RNLI’s inshore lifeboat from Largs supported a search for anyone potentially in the water.
“Everyone was accounted for and one person was transported to hospital by the Scottish Ambulance Service.”
