Auto crash on Lagos-Ibadan expressway claims 5 lives, leaves 8 others injured

At least five persons lost their lives and eight others were injured on Monday, January 15, in an auto accident[1] on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The incident which occurred at 1:58 p.m. involved a Mazda bus with registration number EKY582 YE and a Mercedes Benz truck without a visible plate number. According to the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps[2] (FRSC), Florence Okpe, the accident occurred when the truck experienced a tire burst while in motion, causing it to lose control and collide with the Mazda bus.

In a statement, Okpe provided details, saying, "The fatal crash occurred at about 1358 hrs on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway around Fidiwo. Two vehicles were involved with registration number EKY582 YE Mazda bus and a Mercedes Benz truck with no registration number on it. "A total of 15 persons were involved (eight male adults and seven female adults).

Eight persons were injured in the crash (five male adults and three female adults), while five persons lost their lives (four male adults and one female adult). "The suspected causes of the fatal crash were a tire burst, a speed which led to the loss of control on the part of the truck, and a collision with the bus while in motion. "The Sector Commander FRSC Ogun Sector, CC Anthony Uga, is pained by the unfortunate incident that claimed the lives of five persons on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

He advised motorists to pay more attention to tires and avoid the use of worn-out or expired tires."
