CCTV Trawl Shows Police Officer on the Run After Strangling Girlfriend

CCTV footage released by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) shows former Lancashire police officer James Riley in the aftermath of his violent attack on his girlfriend in a hotel in Manchester on November 10, 2022. James Riley was sentenced to 16 years at Manchester Crown Court on January 12, 2024, after pleading guilty to attempted murder, the GMP said[1]. Riley strangled his girlfriend in a Manchester hotel room, called his family, and then placed an anonymous call for an ambulance as he fled the scene, according to police.

He tried to evade capture by using different types of transport and stopped at different ATMs to withdraw cash. According to news reports[2], Riley attacked his girlfriend after the pair had broken up and he discovered that she intended to form a relationship with another man. The two were in Manchester to attend a concert they had previously purchased tickets for, according to reports.

The woman survived the attack but has reported cognitive problems and anxiety as a consequence, according to news reports[3]. CCTV footage released by the police shows Riley fleeing the hotel and driving away, stopping at different ATMs as well as taking a bus. He can be seen running from one location to the other.
