Charges laid after stolen truck rams RCMP vehicles in Steinbach

A 39-year-old man faces numerous charges including assaulting a police officer causing bodily harm after Mounties said a stolen truck rammed a pair of RCMP vehicles in Steinbach. Article content Steinbach RCMP officers on patrol Thursday located a pickup truck – reported stolen earlier that day – driving in Steinbach and initiated a traffic stop.

The driver refused to stop and fled, RCMP said. Article content The vehicle drove to a dead end street and officers contained the area, but the driver rammed and pushed a police vehicle out of the way.

A second police vehicle attempted to stop the stolen vehicle, and the suspect struck that police vehicle, and then collided with a fence. The driver and passenger were subsequently arrested. During the incident, the stolen vehicle also struck a parked civilian vehicle.

One of the officers involved was injured and taken to hospital where he was treated and released. In addition to two charges of assaulting a police officer, the accused is charged with flight from police, dangerous driving, possession of stolen property, theft of a truck and five counts of mischief over £5,000. He was remanded into custody.

The passenger was released with no charges.

Steinbach RCMP continue to investigate.
