Coleraine: Man flags down midnight patrol after ear bite attack by ‘unknown’ assailant

A man in Coleraine flagged down a midnight police patrol to seek help after his ear was bitten in an assault by an "unknown" attacker over the Christmas[1] period. The man suffered injuries to his ear and was taken to hospital for treatment. While the incident happened on December 26, police moved to launch a formal appeal for information on January 6.

A spokesperson for the PSNI[4] said: "Police are appealing for information following a report of an assault in Coleraine on Tuesday 26 December." Constable Lowry said: "At approximately midnight, a patrolling crew were flagged down by a man in the Railway Road area of the town reporting that he had been assaulted by an unknown man. "The victim sustained injuries to his ear in the attack and was taken to hospital for treatment."

Belfast Live understands the man's ear was bitten during the attack. Constable Lowry continued: "A man, aged in his 40s was arrested a short time later on suspicion of disorderly behaviour and causing grievous bodily harm and has since been released on bail to allow for further enquiries. "I am appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the assault or to anyone who may have CCTV or other footage that could assist with our investigation, to contact police on 101 quoting reference 5 of 27/12/23."

Police added: "You can also submit a report online using our non-emergency reporting form via www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/. Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 11".
