Cornwall police and council joint statement on speed cameras
Cornwall Council and Devon and Cornwall Police, both of which are members of the Vision Zero Road Safety Partnership have issued a joint statement regarding the latest vandalism to the speed cameras in the early hours of the morning on Wednesday (January 3). The joint statement reads: “We are really disappointed to see ye more mindless vandalism targeted at safety cameras[1] in Cornwall. This is the second time the speed camera pole has been cut down (Image: BBC News)“These devices were installed at the wishes of the community to improve road safety in areas which had previously experienced high speeds and several serious and fatal collisions.
“While these cameras are inactive, these communities no longer have the protection they were once afforded, which is really saddening. “The cost of replacing these cameras is also a burden which has to be footed by the taxpayer, making these attacks all the more bizarre.” The police and Cornwall Council are now working with the involved communities to replace the cameras as quickly as possible and identify those who have carried out the vandalism.

Speed camera vandals strike again cutting down mounting pole in early hours[3] Vandals cut down average speed check cameras in raid during the night[4] On Wednesday, the Packet reported that police officers were called to a report of a static speed camera in Tregolls Road, Truro which had been cut down.
Soon after, officers discovered that the speed camera at Perranarworthal[5] which had recently been replaced after it was cut down in October, had once again been targeted. The police are now appealing for witnesses and anyone with relevant information to get in touch. A force spokesperson said: “Police were called at around 3.10am on Wednesday, January 3 to a report of a static speed camera in Tregolls Road[6], Truro had been cut down.
“A second incident was identified by officers soon after at Perranarworthal.” Inspector Tim Evans said: “We are investigating these crimes and continue to urge the community to report any suspicious activity or share information that might help our enquiries. “If you witness these incidents, or have any information or dashcam footage that could help with enquiries, please contact the police via our website, or by calling 101 quoting 50240001590.
