County Durham, Teesside and Yorkshire drivers fined in court
The drivers, who are from County Durham, Teesside and North Yorkshire, have faced justice over the last seven days at Peterlee Magistrates, Newton Aycliffe Magistrates, and Harrogate Justice Centre. Here are the six drivers who have been up in court: Michael Thomas Watts, 51, of Vincent Terrace, Stanley, was snapped by an automatic camera speeding on the M62 between junctions 27 and 26, Bradford, West Yorkshire, on June 26, 2023.
He was clocked doing 81mph on the 70mph stretch of road. The offence, which carries penalty points, was deemed serious enough to receive attention at Leeds court. The court case occurred on January 4, 2024, through a single justice procedure.
He was fined GBP100 by the court, ordered to pay a surcharge of GBP40 and was handed three penalty points on his licence. The court also took Watts’ guilty plea into account when imposing the sentence. A woman was caught exceeding a 50mph speed limit, driving a shocking 67mph on a local motorway.
Helen Elisabeth Jones, 49, of Joicey Place, Newton Aycliffe, Durham, was clocked by an automatic camera on the M621/M1 merge to M1 interchange southbound, West Yorkshire, on July 2, 2023. Jones was found to have contravened a temporary speed restriction imposed under The M1 Motorway (Junction 41 to Junction 44) Temporary Restriction. She was clocked doing 67mph on a 50mph speed limit.
Appearing before a single justice on January 3, 2024, she admitted the offence. Jones was fined GBP230 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of GBP92 and court costs of GBP90. Her guilty plea was taken into consideration when imposing the sentence.
Steven Coates, 52, of Thornfield Road, The Grove, Durham, failed to provide information relating to the identification of a driver when required by West Yorkshire Police. The offence occurred in Bradford on August 4, failing to identify the driver of a vehicle, reportedly involved in an offence. Ordered by the court on January 8, Coates was fined GBP660 and must pay an extra GBP264 victim surcharge, along with GBP90 in costs.
A collection order was put in place and his driving record was endorsed with six penalty points. John Worthington Oates, 68, of Beaurepaire Cottage, Whorlton, County Durham, was charged after an automatic traffic camera recorded him driving at a speed of 58 mph on the M1. The offence took place on June 29, 2024, and was fined GBP220.
He was also ordered to pay a surcharge of GBP88 to victim services and GBP90 in costs. Three points were added to Oates’ driving record, and a notification has been sent to the DVLA. A pensioner was fined GBP100 after she was caught driving sixteen mph over a temporary 50 mph motorway limit.
Elizabeth Jayne Todd, 66, from Castlereagh Close, Newton Aycliffe, Durham, exceeded the temporary 50 mph restriction on the M1, driving at a speed of 66 mph. This offence took place on June 28, 2023, while Todd was driving her vehicle, from the M621/M1 merge (J43) to M1(J42) interchange southbound. She pleaded guilty at her court hearing on January 4, 2024, and her driving record was endorsed with three penalty points.

The court took Todd’s guilty plea into account when determining her fine. Todd was ordered to pay a GBP100 fine a GBP40 victim surcharge. A speeder is GBP627 short after ignoring a temporary motorway limit.
Babak Shehni Karamzadeh, 52, from Belle Vue Street, Scarborough, was fined GBP384 for driving above the speed limit on the M1 motorway. He was also given a penalty of four points on his licence. Karamzadeh’s speeding offence occurred on June 28, 2023, between junctions 42 to 44 northbound, West Yorkshire.
He drove his vehicle at 67mph, above the temporary 50mph restriction.
Upon his guilty plea, at a single justice procedure on January 4, Karamzadeh was ordered to pay a GBP153 victim surcharge, and GBP90 in costs, bringing the total fine to GBP627.
According to the court’s instructions, the fine must be paid in full by January 25.
