Crashes on M4 and A4 causes traffic chaos, while there are delays and cancellations on trains through Newbury

There are currently delays on both the railway and the roads around Newbury today (Monday). The M4 remains shut in both directions[1] between junction 14 at Hungerford and junction 15 at Swindon, while crash investigation work continues.

This is following a serious incident late last night. Traffic is also now queuing on the A4 through Midgham, with traffic building up in both directions.

There are reports of an accident between Midgham and Woolhampton, with emergency services on the scene.

Vehicles in the area are currently not moving, while the situation is dealt with. On the railways, passengers are facing delays and cancellations due to a broken rail crossing. Passengers have been warned to expect disruption until tomorrow (Tuesday) morning.

And due to the recent heavy rain and the flooding it has brought to the area, there are no trains running between Newbury and Bedwyn today (Monday).

GWR said it was “sorry for the delay” but damage to lineside components means that Bedwyn to Newbury trains will be suspended.Rail replacement services are running between Newbury and Bedwyn. There are pick up points at Bedwyn station, Hungerford station, Newbury Racecourse station on Hambridge Road and Newbury – on Station Road adjacent to platform 1. The service is currently unable to go through Kintbury due to road closures still in place.

Other bus services are also taking rail customers via any reasonable route including Reading buses Jet Black 1 Newbury (Wharf), Thatcham (Cropper Close), Midgham, Aldermaston, Theale (The Crown), Reading (Station).
