Delays expected as A419 closure continues into the night
The A419 is closed in both directions between the A4259 Commonhead Roundabout at Swindon and junction 15 of the M4 because officers are still investigating the scene where a fatal car crash took place last night. Officers were pursuing a Vauxhall Astra after it failed to stop on the eastbound carriageway in Swindon on Tuesday, January 2. The car exited the motorway at the Junction 15 slip-road, before colliding with a barrier on the roundabout ahead at around 11pm.
A teenage boy was pronounced dead at the scene and three others in the vehicle sustained minor injuries. In addition, the M4 eastbound exit and entry slip roads are also still shut. Police investigations are ongoing and once they are complete the vehicles will be recovered.
There has also been substantial damage to the safety barrier. The road will be closed throughout the evening peak traffic and is unlikely to open before the early hours of the morning. Drivers have been advised to allow extra time for journeys.
Diversion routes via the A3102 and A4259 are in place.
