Derbyshire road closures today as county recovers from Storm Henk flooding

After more than two days of heavy rainfall[1] and adverse weather conditions, Derbyshire, alongside the rest of the UK[2], is now left to pick up the pieces following another huge bout of flooding. Willington was one of the worst areas affected in the county[3]. Officers from the Mercia Police Safer Neighbourhood Team have slammed the “appalling conduct” of some people in the village following the flooding, saying that they had seen people entering floodwater barefoot for a paddle – despite it containing “significant amounts” of raw sewage.

Sudbury was also hit badly by the heavy rainfall, with the A515 near Sudbury playing host to abandoned cars after the River Dove burst its banks on Wednesday morning. The Government[4] has now labelled the county as “low risk” for further flooding, however, people are still advised to travel with caution around affected areas. • If it is time for your windscreen wipers to work, it is time to slow down – rain reduces visibility and the ability to stop.
  • Avoid starting your journey until heavy downpours finish.
  • Choose main roads where you are less likely to be exposed to falling debris.
  • Use dipped headlights if visibility is seriously reduced.
  • Grip the steering wheel firmly in windy conditions.
  • Keep an eye out for gaps in trees, buildings and bridges – this is where gusts of wind can hit.
  • Keep your eyes peeled on the road at all times.
