Driver arrested over unconnected theft after three-vehicle A19 smash sees three taken to hospital

A van driver was arrested over an unconnected incident following a three-vehicle smash on the A19[1]. Police, fire, and ambulance crews attended the southbound stretch of the major road near the Mandale Interchange[2] after two cars and a van collided. The incident, which took place during rush hour on Monday, sparked “severe” delays with traffic left queuing for four miles after two lanes were shut.

The North East Ambulance Service said it took three people to James Cook University Hospital[3], in Middlesbrough[4], for further treatment. Now, Cleveland Police[5] confirmed that the van driver – a man aged 38 – was arrested on suspicion of theft following an unconnected incident. As previously reported, the crash caused lengthy delays, with images showing the extent of the queuing traffic.

Cleveland Fire Brigade sent four engines to the scene, two from Stockton[6], one from Middlesbrough, and another from Thornaby[7]. A force spokesperson said: “We were called to a three-vehicle collision on the A19 near the Mandale Interchange at around 5.10pm on January 8 involving two cars and a van. “Colleagues from Cleveland Fire Brigade[8] and the North East Ambulance Service also attended the scene.

A number of people were taken to hospital with minor injuries. “The 38-year-old male driver of the van arrested on suspicion of theft following an unconnected incident.” A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a 999 call this afternoon at 17:07 relating to a two vehicle road traffic collision at the junction of the A19 south and A1130, Mandale in Thornaby.

We sent one emergency ambulance crew and a clinical team leader and took three patients to James Cook hospital for further assessment and treatment.”
