DWP triggers Cold Weather Payments for 211 areas

Over 200,000 more people are set to receive cold weather payments as freezing temperatures grip Britain. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)[1] has ordered the payments for 211 postcode areas in England and Wales, giving households an extra GBP25 towards their heating bills. This includes parts of the Midlands where it has been cold enough to trigger the special payments. An estimated 211,000 people in Oxfordshire, Yorkshire, Northumberland, Norfolk, Staffordshire and Powys in Wales will benefit from the payments which were triggered on Saturday, January 13, Birmingham Live reports[2].

Several homes in Cumbria have already received three Cold Weather[3] Payments, totalling GBP75 towards heating costs. The payments are made to some people who get certain benefits and are only given out when it gets really chilly between November and April - just like it's been recently. Minister for Pensions Paul Maynard said: "Cold Weather Payments provide much needed support to households when colder weather kicks in, so that families reduce anxiety about bills.

This is part of our wider plan to help those who need it the most, while our number one priority remains driving down inflation and helping everyone's money go further". Around 976,000 payments have now been triggered this winter in parts of the country where the average temperature has dipped to zero or below for a week running. Some of those who can scoop up these payments are collecting Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Universal Credit, or Support for Mortgage Interest.
