DWP warning to millions of Brits that need to check bank account by ‘January 26’

Millions of people across the UK are currently receiving the Winter Fuel Payment in their bank account[1]. The exact date those eligible need to check that the GBP600 sum is in their bank account from the Department for Work and Pensions has been revealed. Birmingham Live reports[2] that most people should have received the DWP Winter Fuel Payment automatically in November or December.

However, if the money is yet to land in your account and you are eligible for the payment, you should contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre after January 26. More than 11.4 million payments were made last year, including 36,000 to expats living abroad. You can get a Winter Fuel Payment[3] if you were born before September 25, 1957 but you will not be eligible if you have been in hospital getting free treatment for more than a year, need permission to enter the UK and your granted leave says that you cannot claim public funds or were in prison for the whole of the week of September 18 – 24 2023.

Poll: Is the government doing enough to help with the cost of living?[4] Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or if you lived in a care home for the whole time from June 26 to September 24, 2023. You’ll get a letter in October or November telling you how much Winter Fuel Payment you’ll get. If you live alone or no one you live with is eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment, you’ll get either GBP500 if you were born between September 25, 1943 and September 24, 1957 or GBP600 if you were born before September 25, 1943.

If you live with someone else who’s eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment your payment may be different if you get one of the following benefits: Pension Credit, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or Income Support.
