Elderly vendor critically injured by pickup in downtown active construction zone
SAN ANTONIO, TX — An elderly man has been hospitalized after leaving his vehicle and ultimately being hit by a passing truck downtown. According to the San Antonio Police Department, the accident occurred on Sunday around 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of W. Commerce St. and S.
Santa Rosa. Police shared that a 46-year-old man was driving a Ford F-150 pickup traveling southbound on Santa Rosa just after W. Commerce.
The specific area was marked as an active construction zone with construction workers present, and construction barricades in place. The 76-year-old pedestrian, who works as a vendor in Market Square, had parked his car between construction barricades that separated the North and South lanes of travel to unload his vehicle. As the driver cleared the intersection, he approached the section where the pedestrian had parked.
Tragically, as the driver passed the pedestrian’s vehicle, the pedestrian walked into the roadway, where there was no designated crosswalk. The driver’s vehicle collided with the pedestrian, causing him to fall and strike his head on the asphalt causing the victim to go unconscious. Emergency Medical Services promptly arrived at the scene and transported the pedestrian to a local hospital for medical attention where he remains in critical condition.
The driver of the pickup truck cooperated fully with the investigation and stayed at the scene.
No criminal charges are anticipated at this time.
