A father-of-one has appeared in court accused of controlling his girlfriend for 16 months before she was found dead at their home just days after Christmas[2].

Stephen Sexton was charged with two counts of coercive or controlling behaviour after Joanna Derkacz's body was discovered at their home in Waterlooville on December 28.

It is alleged that Sexton controlled his partner of three years for a period of 16 months before her death. A police enquiry remains ongoing.

The 36-year-old appeared Portsmouth Magistrates' Court today and entered no pleas in relation to the two charges, but successfully applied to be released on bail to an address in Totton, Hampshire.

Joanna's devastated family previously paid tribute to the 'sweet angel', after they had discovered the 37-year-old's body at the house on Nevinson Way in the Hampshire town, and said they would 'would miss her so much everyday'.

Prosecutor Andrew Coley said: 'In this case an enquiry remains ongoing.

'At the centre of it is Joanna Derkacz, who was found dead on December 28 by family members.'

Sarah Hallett, defending, told the court Sexton has not been charged with any offence in relation to Miss Derkacz's death and that bail 'should be a presumption'.

Chair Magistrate Justin Potter granted Sexton conditional bail after deliberating with fellow magistrates.

She added: 'I am happy to have known Jo not only as a colleague but also as a very good friend. She has always been a source of positivity, energy, and enthusiasm.

'It's too early for her.

Rest in peace Jo. I miss you and send my deepest condolences to your family and friends.'

Joanna's sister, on behalf of her family, released a tribute to their deceased family member, saying: 'We will love you always sweet angel. You didn't deserve this.

I'll fight for the justice till my last breath.

I promise.'

Following Joanna's death, Hampshire Police made a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), who are now conducting an independent investigation into the prior police contact.
