Full list of locations of new Midlands ‘smart’ speed cameras as every driver warned

New ‘intelligent’ speed cameras have been rolled out on busy Midlands roads, with drivers warned they are now more likely to be caught if they go over the limit in these places. Around 20 cameras fitted with improved technology have replaced old yellow box cameras in key locations chosen by police as part of a speeding crackdown. These older cameras were previously switched off so drivers are being warned cameras are now live once again – as it could mean a nasty surprise for anyone who is caught.

Cutting-edge technology means the ‘smart’ cameras will no longer have to rely on road markings. Police have now confirmed a full list of locations to Black Country Live[1]. They are all in Staffordshire, as part of a crackdown by the county force.

  • A449 Wolverhampton Road, Stafford
  • A34 Newcastle Road, Stoke
  • A50/A5008 Potteries Way, Stoke
  • A53 Leek New Road, Stoke

More than one camera has been fitted at each location and they have already been spotted at the sides of these roads. Staffordshire Police has not ruled out extending the rollout in future.

Senior officers hope the new ‘smart’ cameras will help cut speeding and help them process cases quicker. The technology also means should an image be clear enough, drivers could be punished for other offences such as using a phone while behind the wheel. Cameras have been brought back to areas “based on long-term data which confirms that the cameras have been very effective in reducing road traffic collisions”, senior officers say.

They will use a radar device to accurately measure the speed of each vehicle that passes. The cameras will automatically send high-quality images of any vehicles exceeding the speed limit to the enforcement team. Inspector Mark Joynson, of the force’s Roads Policing Unit, said recently: “Speed limits are really important for road safety as the speed a vehicle travels at is a major contributor to the outcome if someone is involved in a road traffic collision.

“The installation of the new technology will make it easier to check speeds across Staffordshire[4] and we hope they will provide a visual reminder of the work we do every day to keep all road users as safe as possible.”
