Fundraiser launched for UPS worker killed on Christmas Day
Jean Houston, aged 61, was killed in a car crash on the A338 near East Hanney, near Wantage[1] on Christmas Day. Since then, a fundraiser has been set up by Darren Shelter for her husband Paul Houston who was in the car during the accident. The fundraiser, which has raised more than GBP2000, said: “I know money is tight, especially at this time of year but if you can spare a couple of bob myself, Paul and his friends and family would be truly grateful
“I know how helpful something like this can be at a truly horrific time only compounded by the day it happened. “For anyone wondering Paul is ok apart from a few cuts and bruises.” A red Mini Cooper and a white Peugeot 208 were involved in the crash that occurred between East Hanney and Frilford at around 11.15am on Monday, December 25.
The other driver, a man in his 30s, suffered life-changing injuries and was taken to hospital. Ms Houston worked for UPS at the Abingdon[2] centre with the company paying tribute following the incident. A UPS spokesperson said: “We are all deeply saddened by this tragic loss.
We’re in touch with Jean’s family and are offering support and our deepest condolences during this difficult time.” The family of 61-year-old Ms Houston have also released a tribute to her. It reads: “Jean Elizabeth Houston.
Loved and respected by all that know her. Your kindness towards others without hesitation, endeared you to us all. “A happy go lucky attitude, an infectious giggle and smile.
A deep love of animals and a sense of care. Always others first, a beautiful human being.” Ms Houston’s family are being supported by specially trained Thames Valley Police officers, while the force continues its appeal for witnesses following the fatal crash.
Tributes to Jean were also published on social media after Thames valley Police released the news of the crash on its South Oxon and vale[3] of White Horse Facebook page. One tribute, which came from Tasha Simmonds, said: “Rest in peace auntie Jean, our hearts are broken. Sleep tight.”
Another, from Maria Webb, said: “Rest in peace, Jeanie.” Many of those commenting were offering their condolences to Ms Simmonds, with messages including “thoughts, love and hugs to you all” and “I am so sorry for your loss.” A red Mini Cooper and a white Peugeot 208 were involved, with the crash occurring between East Hanney and Frilford at around 11.15am on Monday, December 25.
The other driver, a man in his 30s, suffered life-changing injuries and remains in hospital.Others who were present at the scene of the crash have commented on what they saw. Eyewitness Debb Simeone said: “I’ve been thinking about this since coming across the awful scene. I’d hoped and prayed that all would be ok.
“I’m so very sorry to hear this sad, sad news. My thoughts are with all affected.” Another eyewitness, Lucy Langdon, added: “My heart goes out to all the families.”
Vice chairman of East Hanney Parish Council Paul Aram remarked that this was an extremely unfortunate incident, and stated that the road isn’t an area known to be dangerous. He said: “This is very shocking. Our thoughts are with the friends and family of all involved.”
The road was closed between the A415 and A417 for several hours while the crash was dealt with.
Investigating officer detective constable Nigel Doyle, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, has asked any drivers with a dash-camera who were in the area at the time to check their recordings and let police know if they captured anything.
