Grimsby Town ‘in mourning’ after youth player Cameron Walsh and father David killed in Tetney crash

Grimsby Town FC said the club is in mourning after youth player Cameron Walsh and his father David were killed in a crash in Tetney. The 16-year-old and Mr Walsh, 40, died when their vehicle entered water at Tetney Lock on Saturday. Emergency services were called to reports that a blue Mercedes 300 had left the road and become submerged in water.

A growing number of floral tributes and cards have since been left at the scene. In a statement released on Monday night (January 8), the Mariners confirmed the “tragic loss”. It said Cameron was a “much-loved figure'” and described his father as a “wonderful person”

The statement said: “It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that Grimsby Town Football Club announces the untimely passing of one of our cherished youth team members, Cameron Walsh, aged 16, and his father Dave. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, 6th January. “Cameron Walsh was an integral part of the GTFC academy.

His passion for the game, coupled with his undeniable talent, made him a much-loved figure among teammates, coaches, and the entire Grimsby Town family. “The Club is devastated by this heart breaking loss and extends its deepest condolences to the family during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate through the pain and grief that comes with such a tragedy.”

We will pay tribute to Cameron and Dave at our game vs Notts County on Saturday (further details to follow).

We understand that a Go Fund Me page has been set up to support the family and we will communicate details of this, once confirmed.” Lincolnshire Police said the incident was reported at 1.33pm on Saturday. Emergency services including water rescue crews, police and East Midlands Ambulance Service attended the scene.

The force is now appealing for anyone with information to get in touch. A spokesperson said: “We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the vehicle driving prior to the incident and captured it on dashcam or has footage of the collision itself. Please check footage from the Laceby crossroads at Laceby, Grimsby, and the surrounding roads leading to the Tetney Lock Road area between 12:30pm and 1.33pm.

“At this stage it is not believed there were any other vehicles involved but we are keeping an open mind as the investigation progresses.”
