Grimsby Town players and fans pay poignant tribute to Cameron and David Walsh at Blundell Park

Minute’s applause held for father and son, who died tragically in accident at Tetney Lock Grimsby Town players, fans and officials have come together to pay tribute to youth player Cameron Walsh and his father David. Cameron, 16, and David, 40, died in a car accident at Tetney Lock last Saturday.

A minute’s applause in memory of father and son was held before the match against Notts County today. A picture of Cameron, who had been an “integral part” of the club’s academy, was featured on the cover of the matchday programme. Tributes were also placed on a bench at the memorial garden outside Blundell Park, including a number 3 shirt and flowers from the club, with a note reading “forever in our hearts”.

Earlier, Debbie Cook, the club’s chief executive, said she hoped that the game would be the “biggest mark of respect”. She added: “That respect will go on and on and they will always be incredibly fondly remembered here and a part of our club and history.” Cameron and David died after the car they were travelling in crashed and became submerged in water[2] off Tetney Lock Road.

Police, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue and East Midlands Ambulance Service crews were all sent to the scene, where the father and son were pronounced dead.

David was also a well-known figure in the local footballing world.

He played for Cleethorpes Town before becoming a junior manager there. The club described him as a “wonderful person”[3].
