Lancashire Police in the snow on January 16
There have been a number of road traffic collisions across Preston and the wider county as the first of three days of forecast snow hits. Advertisement [9] Preston woke up covered in snow for the first time in 2024 as the cold start to the year continued.
There are Met Office[10], UKHSA[11] and National Highways[12] warnings in place for Preston across this week. Police said they are responding to an ‘influx’ of crashes attributed to the conditions with drivers urged to adjust their conditions. At around 7am, police reported a collision on Golden Way heading towards Preston.
Meanwhile, in Back Lane in Weeton is currently closed in both directions between Weeton Road and Bradshaw Lane. Advertisements A brief statement from Lancashire Road Police said: “First shift back for Team 3, and this morning we continue to respond to an influx in RTC’s across Lancashire.
Please be mindful of the conditions and adjust your driving accordingly.” The Met Office issued the following advice for people driving in snow:
- Using dipped headlights
- Accelerate gently, use low revs and change to higher gears as quickly as possible
- Starting in second gear will help with wheel slip
- Maintain a safe and steady speed. Keep your distance from other vehicles
- Keep a constant speed up hills.
Leave plenty of room between cars
- Use a low gear to go down hill and try to avoid braking unless necessary
- Steer into skids. Do not take your hands of the wheel or slam on the brakes
