The aim has been to widen pavements and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. But now lorries are parking illegally on the revamped street. Councillor Caroline Thomas, Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for transport, said, “Our civil enforcement officers will regularly patrol around Trowbridge, including Castle Street, if any vehicles are seen parking behind a yellow line restriction a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) would be issued.

“Wiltshire Police are also able to issue fixed penalty notices if vehicles are seen to be causing an obstruction.” The roadworks formed part of the GBP16 million package of town centre improvements funded through the government’s Future High Streets Fund. Access was maintained for local amenities, but some businesses reported a loss of trade and local drivers were affected by congestion.

Wiltshire Council says that further works are still to be completed during the evenings to improve the zebra crossing outside the Shires shopping centre.

It is hoped that the finished works will enhance Caste Street and improve access in and around the town centre.
