M1 live updates as accident causes ‘long delays’ on busy motorway

An accident on the M1 northbound is leading to “long delays” of approximately 30 minutes around junction 30 for Worksop[1] and Sheffield south. One lane is closed just after the junction according to traffic aggregator INRIX, with traffic tailing back to junction 29a for Bolsover this afternoon (Tuesday, January 16). Photos courtesy of National Highways show traffic travelling bumper-to-bumper along the stretch,[2] with the southbound side clear.

Google Maps reports the journey time on the stretch between the Markham Vale services at junction 29a to Barlborough at junction 30 as 22 minutes with drivers recommended to seek an alternative route. Traffic appears to be affected and moving slowly all the way up to Aston and Swallownest at junction 31. This is a breaking incident and you can follow updates as we get them on our live blog below.
