M4 diversion route revealed with road to be closed for most of day

The incident occurred on the M4 between Swindon and Hungerford shortly after 4am on Thursday morning. Two vehicles were involved in the crash and it is not yet known whether there were any injuries. The M4 westbound currently remains closed at the time of writing between Junction 14 and Junction 15 following the collision.

It is open as usual eastbound. National Highways does not expect the road to reopen before 3.15pm on Thursday afternoon and has released an official diversion route for motorists. The route requires drivers to firstly exit the M4 westbound at Junction 14 and join the A338 southbound.

Motorists should then continue southbound on the A338 towards Hungerford before joining the A4 westbound at Bath Road and Charnham Street before continuing until the junction with the B4192. Then they should join the B4192 and continue north-westerly passing through Aldbourne and Liddington, until the A419 Commonhead Roundabout. Finally motorists are advised to join the A419 southbound and then re-join the M4 westbound at Junction 15.

The road had been visited by the emergency services earlier in the morning with Thames Valley Police conducting a collision investigation.

A spokesperson for the force at the time said: “The closure is likely to last several hours so please avoid the area and use the diversion.”
