M4 traffic news: Cause of crash which caused chaos revealed

Motorists travelling eastbound between Junction 17 and 16 on New Year's Eve (Sunday) were delayed by the congestion caused by the incident. Wiltshire Police has since revealed that the collision which closed the road was caused by a car hitting the central reservation. The incident happened at just after 12.30pm on Sunday, December 31 on the eastbound side of the M4 between Junction 16 for West Swindon[1] and Junction 17 for Chippenham.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: "We responded to reports of a road traffic collision involving a single vehicle hitting the central reservation on the M4 just after 12.30pm on Sunday afternoon.

"The collision happened between Junction 16 for Swindon and Junction 17 for Chippenham.

"Luckily no injuries were reported, and no arrests were made."
