M4 traffic: Pedestrian, 80s, killed as road closed for most of day
The collision, which took place at approximately 9.40pm on Sunday, January 7, caused the motorway to close for around 18 hours between Junctions 15 (Swindon) and 14 (Hungerford). A man in his 80s was struck by a vehicle whilst crossing the road and was killed, police have confirmed. Police are now appealing for witnesses.
The incident happened just over the Wiltshire border in Berkshire. A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said: “At around 9.40pm yesterday (January 7), a collision occurred where by a pedestrian who is believed to have been earlier driving a grey Hyundai Iconic, has been struck as they were crossing the carriageway. “The incident happened on the eastbound carriageway of the M4 between junctions 15 to 14.
“Tragically, the pedestrian, a man in his eighties, died from his injuries. The carriageway was closed for some time while recovery and investigation was ongoing.” Investigating officer Sergeant Lyndsey Blackaby, of the Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit, added: “Our condolences and thoughts are with their loved ones.
“The man’s next of kin has been informed and they are being supported by specially trained officers.
“We are appealing for anyone with dash-cam footage or witness information to please come forward, calling 101 or reporting online, quoting reference 432400009724.
“We would like to thank the public for their patience while we conducted our enquiries.”
