M61 junction 2 slip road closed after crash involving one car

The crash happened at around 7.17am on the M61 northbound near junction two, which has closed the slip road there, causing miles of congestion back to junction 14 of the M60 near to Swinton Interchange. Emergency services attended the scene, and the car has now been cleared from the carriageway, however the lane will remain closed for emergency repair works for the barrier and lamppost. A spokesperson for National Highways North West said: “The incident involved one car which collided with a barrier and a lamppost.

“It was reported to us at 7.17am and emergency services attended. “The car has been cleared from the carriageway and all lanes on the M61 are now clear, but the incident did cause major congestion this morning going back to Junction 14 (Swinton) on the M60. “Repairs are now required to the barrier and lamppost however, and this has necessitated the closure of the slip road at Junction 2 of the M61 which serves the A666.

These works are ongoing at present.” The Bolton News: M61 lane closureM61 lane closure (Image: National Highways)Motorists travelling to Bolton[1] faced severe delays with one driver being in their car for three hours to travel from Warrington to Bolton town centre. They hit congestion from the broken-down vehicle on the M62 Westbound from junction 12 of the M60, Eccles Interchange, to junction 11, A574 Birchwood Way (Birchwood) as well as the traffic from the accident.

They said: “This is the longest time I have ever been stuck in traffic. “I didn’t know when I would actually get to Bolton. “Traffic came to a standstill for a large part of my journey, and traffic was very slow.”

Another motorist said they didn’t even attempt to go into the office and are working from home instead.

The National Highways website states the area is to return to normal between 1.30pm and 1.45pm.
