Man charged with stealing truck, trespassing in Naperville
A Hanover Park man has been charged with trespassing and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon after a several-hour standoff Saturday with Naperville police.
Naperville police report they were called at 4:26 a.m. to the 1600 block of Country Lakes Drive to investigate a report of a stolen vehicle in a parking lot.
The person in the vehicle, Jonathan Awad, allegedly ran into a nearby apartment building, according to a news release from police.
The residents did not want Awad in the apartment, but he refused to leave, according to police. The residents left and told police Awad had shown a handgun to them.
The police department’s special response team and crisis negotiators were deployed. Awad left the apartment voluntarily after several hours.
Awad, 20, of the 4500 block of Whitney Drive, Hanover Park, is charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle, trespass to residence, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and resisting a peace officer.
Court records indicate the weapon was a handgun and that he did not have a firearm owners identification card.
Awad was charged in December with felony theft. In that case, he is accused of stealing a backpack containing £10,000 from its owner in September 2023. Awad was served with that arrest warrant Sunday, according to court records.
Prosecutors asked Monday to have his sentence on a 2021 case revoked, alleging he violated the terms by failing to report to the probation services department.
He had pleaded guilty in September 2023 to aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer and was sentenced to 10 days in jail and 24 months of probation, according to DuPage County court records.
His next court date on all three cases is Jan.
