Man dies after crash involving three cars and pedestrian closed major road overnight
A man has died following a crash in Hartlepool which saw a fleet of 999 crews descend on a major road. Emergency services were called to the A689 Stockton[1] Road in Hartlepool[2] on Friday after a “serious crash” involving a pedestrian and multiple vehicles. Crews were called at around 9.05pm and the road was closed overnight.
The force has now confirmed, the incident involved a pedestrian and three vehicles; a Vauxhall Astra, Kia Sportage and Ford Puma. Sadly the 38-year-old male pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. A spokesperson said: “His family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
Our thoughts remain with the man’s family at this extremely difficult time.” The North East Ambulance service also confirmed their attendance. They sent several vehicles to the crash.
A spokesperson said: “We received a call to 999 at 9.08pm to reports of a road traffic incident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian on the A689, Stockton Road in Billingham[3]. We sent at duty officer, the Medicar, two emergency ambulance crews, a clinical team leader and a specialist paramedic. Police also attended the scene.”
On Friday evening, police urged motorists to find an alternative road and thanked drivers for their patience, a spokesperson said: “The A689 Stockton Road in Hartlepool is currently closed in both directions following a serious collision. Emergency services remain at the scene. Please use alternative routes.
Thank you for your patience.” Pictures seen by Teesside Live show around six 999 vehicles in attendance. The road was blocked off with cones and a police officer guarded the scene.
The force issued a further statement on Saturday morning notifying drivers the road has reopened. They said: “The A689 Stockton Road in Hartlepool is now reopened following a serious collision. Thank you for your patience.”
Police have now launched an appeal asking for witnesses to come forward, a spokesperson said: “Police are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area of the A689 at Newton Bewley around 9.05pm on Friday, January 5 and may have witnessed the incident or may have dash cam footage which could assist the ongoing police investigation. “Anyone with information is asked to contact Cleveland Police[4] on 101, quoting event number 002914.” Footage can also be uploaded here: https://orlo.uk/J4HoF[5]
