Man dies in M4 tragedy as police issue statement

A man has been killed after being struck by a vehicle as he crossed the M4. The tragedy happened at around 9.40pm on Sunday (January), closing a stretch of motorway for around 18 hours into Monday afternoon. Thames Valley Police said the man, who was in his 80s, is understood to have earlier been driving a grey Hyundai Iconic.

He died from his injuries and the motorway was closed between junction 15 for Swindon East and junction 16 for Hungerford for recovery of vehicles and investigation. The road was reopened westbound at around 11am today (Monday) and eastbound at around 3.45pm. The man's next of kin has been informed.

Try BristolLive Premium for FREE with no ads and new features[2] A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said: "At around 9.40pm yesterday (January 7), a collision occurred where by a pedestrian who is believed to have been earlier driving a grey Hyundai Iconic, has been struck as they were crossing the carriageway. Tragically, the pedestrian, a man in his eighties, died from his injuries.

"The carriageway was closed for some time while recovery and investigation was ongoing." Anyone with dash-cam footage or information has been urged to come forward, calling 101 or reporting online quoting incident 432400009724.

Investigating officer Sergeant Lyndsey Blackaby, of the Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit, said: "Our condolences and thoughts are with their loved ones.

The man's next of kin has been informed and they are being supported by specially trained officers."
