Man hospitalised after Exeter ‘serious assault’ on New Year’s Day

A man is currently in police custody following an alleged serious assault in Exeter[1] city centre. Devon and Cornwall Police officers were called to a property in the High Street, between Paris Street and North Street, by paramedics from South Western Ambulance Service shortly before 9am New Year’s Day. A spokesperson for the force confirmed the initial call suggested a “GBH [grievous bodily harm] level of assault” had taken place.

As a result a man in his 40s was arrested at the location on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and he was taken to Exeter police station custody suite where he remains. A man suffering head injuries was treated at the scene before being taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital for treatment. It is understood he remains at the hospital at this time.

Anyone with information about the matter is urged to call police on 101 or visit the Devon and Cornwall Police website here[2] to report information, quoting log number 430 of 1/1/2024.

Alternatively, call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
