Multiple crashes on the M6 force police to issue New Year’s Eve warning
Motorists have been urged to ‘drive carefully’ following several collisions on the M6. Police issued a warning on Saturday (December 30). Drivers have been told to take care on the roads today (December 31) as there will likely be heavy downpours in Coventry[1] and Warwickshire[2].
Cops say the wet weather and surface water can have a ‘huge impact’ on stopping distances, particularly on the M6. It comes as Warwick Racecourse[3] decided to abandon the scheduled racing earlier today due to the course being ‘waterlogged.’ Officials were left with no choice but to call off the fixture following heavy rainfall on Saturday (December 30). Forecasters at the Met Office[6] say ‘heavy showers’ will be continuing throughout the day in the West Midlands.
It will also start to ‘feel a bit colder’ in the coming days with temperatures expected to drop to 4C. A spokesman for Warwickshire Police[7] said on Saturday: “With the heavy rain currently falling across the county, we are receiving multiple calls tonight (December 30) as there have already been a number of reports of collisions on the M6. “Remember the wet weather and surface water can have a huge impact on stopping distances so please bear this in mind and if you need to travel, drive carefully.”
