N.J. man struck and killed on shoulder of I-280; motorist charged
A Hackettstown man was charged with vehicular homicide after he slammed into a car that had stopped on the shoulder of I-280, killing a pedestrian, New Jersey State Police said.
Valerian Kapanadze, 48, was arrested at the scene of the 4:14 p.m. crash Sunday the westbound I-280 in Roseland. Kapanadze was driver a pickup that struck a car stopped on the right shoulder near milepost 4.4, police said.
Luis Nicheporuck, 56, of Randolph, was struck and killed as he stood outside the stopped car, State Police said. There were no other injuries, State Police said.
Kapanadze was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, child endangerment, evidence tampering and numerous motor vehicle traffic violations and was taken to the Essex County Jail to await a detention hearing.
The State Police did not explain why Kapanadze was charged with child endangerment and evidence tampering.
The accident remains under investigation, State Police said.
