One lane open on 4th Street bridge following weekend crash
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) -- One lane on the 4th Street bridge in downtown Columbus opened just before 6 a.m. Monday. The overpass stretching across Interstate 70 near I-71 closed Saturday night when a semi truck hauling an excavator crashed[1] into a support beam beneath the bridge, leaving it structurally unsound.
Police had originally told ABC 6 on Saturday night that the bridge was no longer structurally sound, and that it would be closed "long-term." But an outside contractor salvaged a beam from the recently demolished Front Street bridge to serve as a brace supporting the damaged section of the road, with additional bracing to be installed. An ODOT representative said approximately 20,000 vehicles drive over the bridge every day.
Nobody was injured in the crash.
