Police update after fatal A419 crash killed teenage boy in West Country

Three people arrested after a late-night crash which killed a teenager have been released either on bail or under investigation, police have said. Emergency services were called out to the incident at around 11pm on Tuesday (January 2) after a Vauxhall Astra crashed into a roundabout at the M4 junction of the A419 in Swindon[1]. Wiltshire Police confirmed the crash happened while officers were pursuing the car and one of the occupants, believed to be a teenage boy, died at the scene[2].

The force added that the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been called in to investigate what happened in the build-up to the crash. Following the collision, three people – a man in his 20s and two women in their 20s – were arrested. In a statement issued this afternoon, police gave an update on the arrested trio.

Meanwhile, the two women arrested on suspicion of taking a vehicle without consent have been released under investigation. Formal identification on the deceased is yet to be completed. The A419 was closed for closed while investigations took place, along with a lane on the M4 exit slip road.

A police spokesperson said: “The three people arrested following the fatal road traffic collision on the A419 at the junction with the M4 on Tuesday night (January 2) have been released. “A man in his 20s arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been released on bail. Two other occupants of the car, both women in their 20s, who were arrested on suspicion of taking a vehicle without consent, have been released under investigation.

“The collision took place shortly before 11pm on Tuesday night, when a Vauxhall Astra collided with the roundabout at the junction. “Sadly, one of the occupants of the car, believed to be a teenage male, died at the scene as a result of the injuries he sustained. Formal identification has not yet taken place.

“One lane of the M4 exit slip road and one lane of the A419 from the Commonhead roundabout to Junction 15 have now reopened.”
