Powys A458: Safety calls after woman killed in road crash

The Conservative MS has called for more safety measures to be put in place along the A458 in Middletown, reportedly raising the issue with the Welsh Government Transport Minister and with Dyfed-Powys Police, who have attended the scenes of several crashes along the road. The concern follows multiple collisions that took place on the road throughout 2023, including a recent crash that proved to be fatal. Mr George said: “There have been many accidents on this stretch of road, and sadly one recent fatal accident.

I am in full agreement something needs to be done to make this route safer and I do believe there is a need for a scheme for this route.” In May, a woman and child were airlifted to hospital following a crash between a car and a lorry along the road, having sustained life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the lorry also sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital. In November, an 87-year-old woman died following a crash involving two cars and a bus. The accident occurred when the driver of a blue Honda Civic attempted to overtake a bus in the opposition direction along the A458 near to Bank Farm Caravan Park. The Honda collided head on with a Ford Fiesta, which in turn collided with the bus.

On the specific safety measures he wanted to see introduced, Mr George added: “Traffic Police responded to me with a comprehensive reply, stating they have highlighted concerns to the Trunk Road Agency in relation to road markings and have asked that solid white lines be extended further towards Middletown and to repaint the markings towards Trewern, which are faded.” “Dyfed-Powys Police also confirmed to me that they have contacted ‘Go Safe Camera Van’ and have asked them to have more of a presence in the area. They are planning to have 3 visits a week to increase overall presence.

“The Policing Unit has also made the area ‘an area of concern’ which is then highlighted to road Policing officers who can attend the area as part of their patrols.

As a result of this I am informed that Police have already dealt with traffic offences at this location.”
