Police have issued an appeal for further information after an “aggressive man” assaulted members of the public and climbed into cars in Co Down. A number of reports of assault were reported to police in the Bryansford Road area of Newcastle[1] on Saturday morning, January 6. A 28-year-old man was arrested by police and has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.
Police Newry, Mourne and Down posted on social media on Saturday evening they received reports of an “aggressive man” assaulting members of the public. In a further statement, a spokesperson for the PSNI[4] said: “Police are investigating a number of reports of assault in the Bryansford Road area of Newcastle on Saturday morning, 6th January. “Around 9am, it was reported that a man had assaulted members of the public in the area near the tennis courts.
“A queue of traffic had formed and he then began punching a number of vehicles before gaining entry to two cars. No keys were available so he could not make off in these vehicles. A further assault then occurred including assault on a police officer.
“Officers arrested a 28-year-old man who has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries. “Anyone with information, who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage, should contact police at www.psni.police.uk/report[5] or phone 101 quoting reference 345 06/01/24.”
