Sainsbury’s statement after delivery driver involved in fatal Harborne collision

A Sainsbury’s[1] delivery driver was being ‘supported’ by colleagues after their vehicle was involved in a fatal collision that killed a woman[2]. Emergency services were called to reports of a collision between a pedestrian and a delivery van on Lordswood Road, Harborne[3], on Monday, January 15. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the unnamed woman, who was 80, died at the scene.

Sainsbury’s confirmed one of its delivery drivers was involved in the incident and they were ‘helping the police with their investigation.’ Two ambulances, two paramedic officers and a trauma doctor were sent to the scene. The victim has not yet been named by police, but tributes to the woman have appeared outside a sheltered housing facility on Lordswood Road.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson told BirminghamLive[5] : “An incident took place involving one of our drivers earlier this week. We are supporting the colleague involved in any way we can and helping the police with their investigation. Our thoughts are also with the woman’s family at this sad and difficult time.”

Concerned residents yesterday told how they feared there would be more fatalities[6] on the road unless safety concerns were addressed. One resident, who wished to only be referred to as David, added: “This is an accident black spot – this is the first fatality but there’s incidents here every single week.” A statement issued by West Midlands Police[7] on the day of the incident reads: “An elderly woman has sadly died after being hit by a delivery van just before midday on Lordswood Road, Harborne .

The delivery driver stopped at the scene and is helping us with our enquiries. Anyone with information should contact us via Live Chat on our website quoting log 2017 of 15/1.” Police added: “Road safety is a priority for us and partners including Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), local authorities and the region’s Police and Crime Commissioner.

We joined forces under the Operation Triton banner last year to pledge action to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads and this work continues.”
