Several ‘near misses’ as ice rink fears become reality on notorious Nuneaton road

Police responded to several ‘near misses’ as ice rink fears came true on a Nuneaton road. Ongoing issues with a water leak on Atherstone Road led to locals not only dubbing it a ‘wheel wash’, but also raising concerns that in cold weather it would become an ‘ice rink’.[1][2] Their fears have become a reality this morning (January 9) as Nuneaton and Bedworth[3] Police has confirmed that officers have responded to several call-outs to the stretch of road, close to what is known locally as ‘clock bridge’.

Reports locally suggest that there have been a number of almost ‘nasty’ collisions, one including a motorbike. One resident told CoventryLive: “As predicted, the problems at ‘wheel wash’ hill. There are car wheels spinning on icy surfaces, they can’t get up the slope, traffic is all backed up.

I said this was an accident waiting to happen.” Nuneaton and Bedworth Police have said that there have no ‘serious injuries’ but as temperatures are set to stay below freezing, have urged motorists to be careful. “Please be aware there is ice on some roads,” the team reported. “We’ve already been called to Atherstone[5] Road in Hartshill several times this morning after a number of reported collisions and near misses.

Thankfully there have been no serious injuries but please drive carefully.”

Issues with a water leak on the stretch of road have been ongoing since the summer and local borough councillors have been working on getting the situation resolved.
