Suspect fleeing police in SW Ohio crashes into patrol cars, exchanges gunfire with officers
DAYTON, Ohio -- A man accused of hitting a female with his vehicle Monday led police on a high-speed chase, reportedly firing at officers during the pursuit and then ending with gunfire after he crashed into two patrol cars.
A Trotwood police officer was hospitalized after the suspect's vehicle crashed into the patrol car, according to the Dayton Police Department. The suspect, whose name has not been released, also was taken to a hospital. No information on their conditions was released.
Trotwood police were called to Voyager Village trailer park at about 11 a.m. after receiving a report a female had been struck by a car.
The Dayton Daily News reports[1] the female victim, whose injuries were not life-threatening, is a family member of the suspect.
While officers were giving medical aid to the victim, the suspect drove by at high speed while pointing a long rifle at the officers, police say. Officers began chasing the suspect but he refused to stop and began swerving into oncoming traffic, police say.
Police from several departments began chasing the suspect east on U.S.
35. After making a U-turn, the suspect then started shooting at officers from his vehicle as he continued driving west, police say.
The suspect then drove across all lanes of U.S.
35 at an intersection, hitting a Montgomery County Sheriff's Department vehicle and crashing head-on into a Trotwood police cruiser.
The suspect's vehicle ended up stuck on top of the Trotwood cruiser.
Police say officers fired multiple shots after the crash.
It's unclear if the suspect was wounded by gunfire.
The investigation is ongoing and being conducted by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
