A father-of-two who was critically injured after falling off a moped in Bali is back on Australian soil after generous donors raised thousands of dollars for a medivac flight to bring him home.

Kevin Malligan, 24, travelled to the Indonesian island for New Year’s Eve celebrations just weeks before his second child is due to be born in February when the holiday was abruptly cut short on December 29.

The Sydney[2] man was riding on a moped being driven by a friend when he fell off and hit his head on the road after the vehicle hit a bump.

Mr Malligan sustained critical head and neck injuries in the fall and underwent brain surgery at a hospital in Nusa Dua, about 40km from Denpasar.

He finally touched down on Australian soil on Thursday night after Australians raised over £100,000 for a medivac flight from Indonesia[3] to Sydney.

His wife Leah, who is 32 weeks pregnant and due to give birth next month, has also flown home from Bali after rushing to her husband’s side earlier this week.

He remains in a coma at the Nepean Hospital near Penrith in Sydney’s west.

The father-of-two will continue to be treated for his significant injuries after he suffered a brain bleed and a fractured neck in the fall.

Jodie French, Mr Malligan’s mother-in-law, posted an update to GoFundMe[4] on Thursday.

‘Kevin has been medivacked from Bali today and will be arriving back into Sydney Airport at about 6.10pm tonight, he will then transport to Nepean Hospital,’ she wrote.

‘Kev is still in a critical condition.

We thank all from the bottom of our hearts that have made this possible is this very short time.’

Prior to the flight home, Mr Malligan’s wife Leah shared posted photos from her husband’s hospital bedside in Bali.

‘Not a goodbye but a see you soon back home,’ she wrote.

She thanked family, friends and strangers who had shared their love and support.

‘Happy new year to all our friends, family and the community from Kev and I.

‘I want to thank each and every single person who has donated, shared, liked and messaged me throughout the past few days.

Your constant kindness, love and support is helping us get through this difficult time in our life.

‘Thank you once again from the bottom of my heart – I am so grateful to have my boy coming home.’

Ms Malligan told Daily Mail Australia earlier this week that her husband wasn’t doing anything silly when the crash happened.

‘He and his friend just hit a bump in the road four minutes away from where they were meant to be,’ she said.

She had tried to get travel insurance for him that would cover scooters but there was nothing available, meaning the family’s medical expenses were already up to £90,000 before generous Aussies funded a medivac flight.
