The biggest breaking news stories from Greater Manchester in 2023

2023 was another eventful year – in Greater Manchester and beyond. There have been multiple murders, stabbings and fatal crashes in our region this year. On a more positive note, Manchester City completed a historic treble and the Northern Quarter[1] hosted the Chanel Metiers d’Art fashion show.

Below, you can take a look back at some of the most read and talked-about incidents and events from our region this year. Needless to say, we are unable to include every single significant breaking news story, but these are a few of our biggest stories from 2023.

January 5 – Search sparked for missing aristocrat Constance Marten, her partner Mark Gordon and their newborn baby

Constance Marten and Mark Gordon

Aristocrat Constance Marten and her partner Mark Gordon went missing with their newborn baby after their car was found on the M61 in Bolton[2]. Officers were searching for them for several weeks before they were found in Stanmer Villas in Brighton.

The body of their baby – two-month-old Victoria – was found in a plastic bag in a locked shed at an overgrown allotment in the Hollingbury area on March 1. Marten and Gordon were charged with manslaughter by gross negligence on March 2. They were also charged with concealing a child’s birth and perverting the course of justice.

Ahead of a hearing at the Old Bailey in July, it emerged that the pair faced new charges of child cruelty and causing or allowing the death of a child. It is claimed they caused the baby’s death by their own ‘unlawful act’ or failed to ‘take such steps as could reasonably have been expected’ to protect the baby. The alleged offences are said to have taken place between January 4 and February 27 of this year.

February 19 – Police recover body in search for missing mum Nicola Bulley

Nicola Bulley

Just over the border in Lancashire, Nicola Bulley went missing.

The mum-of-two disappeared after dropping her two daughters at school in St Michael’s on Wyre, Lancashire. The 45-year-old’s body was found in the River Wyre on February 19, about a mile from where she vanished while walking her dog in St Michael’s on Wyre on January 27. An inquest concluded her death was accidental, that she fell into the river on the day she disappeared and died almost immediately in the cold water.

Her disappearance prompted frenzied speculation and multiple conspiracy theories online. During the huge search after she vanished, police urged against people fuelling damaging rumours making their job harder and attracting sightseers to the village where she disappeared. Lancashire Police was criticised over the way it made public details of Ms Bulley’s medical situation, with even the Prime Minister expressing concern that private information had been disclosed.

A review found that in policing terms the missing persons investigation was well handled, but that the force had lost control of the public narrative at an early stage.

March 4 – Human remains discovered in search for missing Peter Baglin

Peter Baglin

Peter Baglin, from Boothstown, vanished from home on December 28 last year. He was missing for almost ten weeks before his body was eventually uncovered in boggy undergrowth at the bottom of a steep embankment near the Bridgewater Canal towpath. An inquest into his death heard how the 55-year-old had gone out for a walk on the evening of December 28, heading to a petrol station on the East Lancashire Road to buy a small bottle of whisky, where he was captured on CCTV.

He wasn’t seen again, but spoke to his wife Michelle Baglin over the phone minutes later, at around 7.45pm, telling her he would ‘be home soon’ and was out on a walk ‘listening to music’. After failing to return home overnight, Peter was reported as missing by his family the next day and a large search ensued. His body was uncovered ten weeks later on March 4.

Giving an emotional statement at the inquest, Peter’s widow Michelle Baglin said that he was ‘her rock’ – particularly when she was diagnosed with breast cancer during the Covid-19[3] pandemic and that they had ‘everything to live for’ as a happily married couple. “Pete was my rock, we had never been apart. He used to tell me ‘as long as you’re okay, I’m okay””, she said.

April 7 – Body of Keano Byrne found in water at Reddish Vale Country Park

Keano Byrne

Keano Byrne, a 26-year-old dad from Gorton[4], had been reported missing almost two weeks before his body was discovered on April 7.

His body was found in water at Reddish[5] Vale Country Park in Stockport[6]. A murder probe was launched, but following an investigation, officers now believe his death was not suspicious. His inquest opening at South Manchester Coroner’s Court in July heard officers do not believe there was any third party involvement in his death.

Paying tribute to him following his death, the 26-year-old’s father said he was a ‘happy-go-lucky’ lad with a ‘good heart’ who was ‘adored’ by his three-year-old daughter. “He was robbed of life, and he will never see his daughter grow up. We all miss him so much and we will always remember Keano for all joy he brought to our lives,” he added.

“Our Keano has been taken from us far too soon and we are now left with a huge hole in all our hearts that will not be filled. I have no doubt Keano’s legacy with go on forever, we all miss you so much Keano.” The Manchester Evening News has previously revealed the 26-year-old’s criminal past[7], including convictions for robbery, assault, dangerous driving, possession of drugs and criminal damage.

Mr Byrne was jailed by a judge for his crimes in 2019. Greater Manchester Police[8] initially launched a murder investigation following his death and arrested two men, aged 26 and 30. Officers later eliminated the 26-year-old from enquiries and released the other suspect on bail pending further investigations.

Area coroner Chris Morris said a post mortem examination carried out by pathologist Charles Wilson gave Mr Byrne’s cause of death as drowning.

April 13 – Prisoner stages 12-hour protest on Strangeways roof

Joe Outlaw scaling the roof at Strangeways

Joe Outlaw scaled the roof of Strangeways prison in a 12 hour protest. Outlaw was apparently railing against IPP, sentences of imprisonment for the public protection, which were scrapped in 2012. But Outlaw and other prisoners are still serving the sentences, which have since been branded ‘unjust’.

He was jailed in 2011 for robbery for an indeterminate period. Hours after coming down from the roof Outlaw appeared at Bolton Crown Court by video link from HMP Manchester and was sentenced for a previous incident at HMP Hindley in Wigan[9]. Outlaw, 36, admitted causing criminal damage to his cell on January 28 last year.

The court heard that he spent the early evening making threats he would smash up his care and separation unit (CSU) cell to prison guards outside. Outlaw then spent the night trashing his cell, causing more than GBP17,000 worth of damage. He also used a razor blade to cut his stomach.

His barrister said the incident was a ‘cry for help’. Judge Nick Clarke KC sentenced him to a further 16 months in prison.

April 23 – Rees Howarth killed by his partner Katie Yeomans in Hyde

Katie Yeomans, left, has been jailed for five years and three months for the manslaughter of Rees Howarth

Rees Howarth, 28, was killed by his partner Katie Yeomans following a scuffle outside her home in Hyde[10] in April this year, after he became ‘jealous of another man Yeomans, also 28, plunged a kitchen knife into his chest outside. Manchester Crown Court[11] heard there had been a history of Mr Howarth being ‘abusive’ and ‘violent’ towards Yeomans.

She has since pleaded to guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of loss of control. In November, Yeomans, of Thorsby Avenue, was jailed for five years and three months. After sentencing, in a tribute released by Greater Manchester Police, his family said that Rees was an ‘active and outgoing man, who was funny and loving’.

“He had a heart of gold and was caring and kind-hearted. He was a larger-than-life character who will be sadly missed by all who loved him,” it read.

May 6 – Manchester celebrates the Coronation of King Charles

People came together to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III as street parties were held across Greater Manchester. Communities around the region marked the crowning of the new King and Queen by throwing a right royal knees up.

Big screens were put up in Piccadilly Gardens[12] as well as in other parts of the region. Streets could be seen adorned in bunting and Union Jacks across the long bank holiday weekend as many raised a glass to King Charles and Queen Camilla, who were crowned at a Westminster Abbey service attended by more than 2,000 guests. A grand military procession through central London and an appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace alongside other members of the royal family[13] rounded off their momentous day.

May 13 – Pregnant mum Frankie Jules-Hough is killed by boy racer

Frankie Jules-Hough

Frankie Jules-Hough, 38, from Chadderton[14], Oldham[15], died in a crash in Bury[16] in May after Adil Iqbal, 22, lost control of his father’s BMW M140i.

She was pregnant at the time. Iqbal had filmed himself reaching speeds of 123mph in the vehicle before it crashed into Ms Jules-Hough’s Skoda Fabia, which had pulled over on the hard shoulder with a tyre puncture. She was 17-weeks pregnant.

Neither mum nor unborn child survived. Frankie and her partner planned to name their daughter Neeve. Frankie’s son Tommy, aged nine; and nephew Tobias, aged four, were passengers in her car – all wearing seatbelts – suffered serious injuries.

Frankie’s two-year-old Rocky, who was strapped into a child seat, miraculously unharmed. In July, Iqbal was jailed for 12 years by Judge Maurice Greene after he pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving; and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court.

In October, three senior judges sitting at the Court of Appeal in London quashed the sentence after the Attorney General has asked them re-consider the ‘unduly lenient’ sentence. Iqbal, watching on a videolink HMP Featherstone in Staffordshire, was told his sentence had been increased from 12 to 15 years.

May 21 – Warren Burns murdered in his own home

Warren BurnsWarren Burns

Warren Burns was murdered in his own home in Withington[17] on May 21.

The beloved dad, who had just become a father again to a 10-week-old son, was battered to death after Ryan White and Damian White stormed in. Mr Burns was kicked, stamped on, punched and beaten, and died three days later from his injuries. His partner Lucille Lee, and their baby, were both at home at the time and fled from the house in fear during the brutal attack.

Both Ryan and Damian White, who are related, were convicted following a trial at Manchester Crown Court, of murder and manslaughter respectively. A third man, Brandon White, was cleared of both offences and a woman, Casey-Jay McDonagh Andrews was found not guilty of assisting an offender. At a sentencing hearing earlier this month,

Ryan White was jailed for life to serve a minimum term of 17 years in prison; and Damian White was jailed for 11 years.

Salah Eldin Adam

Salah Eldin Adam, 21, was fatally stabbed on Kings Road in Old Trafford[18] on May 31. Xaviour Wynter, of no fixed abode, has been charged with his murder. He has also been charged with possession of a bladed article.

Wynter has been remanded into custody. Demari Adrian Raymond Rose, 19, of no fixed abode, has also charged with murder and possession of a bladed article. Two males who were arrested on the night of the attack – a 15-year-old boy on suspicion of murder and a 16-year-old on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon – were released on bail.

Paying tribute to him following his death, Salah’s family said: “Salah was the backbone of the family and carried the family through anything and everything. He was our precious, beautiful son and a true hero. “He was a supportive brother and precious son, a most genuine and loving soul with a big heart.

He always found space in his heart to forgive all. “He was always respectful and had kind words to say for all, everyone who met him wanted to be friends with him and was respected by all people of all ages. We are immensely proud of him.”

June 10 – Manchester City completes a historic treble

The Manchester City treble parade through Manchester

There were tears and disbelief as Manchester City won the Champions League for the first time.

A second half goal from Spanish midfielder Rodri secured a 1-0 win for the Blues to claim a historic Treble. More than 2,000 miles away from the game in Istanbul, thousands of City fans who couldn’t get their hands on tickets watched on at special screenings across Manchester. There was scenes of jubilation and ecstasy as City navigated a tense game to win the club’s first European title since 1970, and elevate them to the pinnacle of world football.

The celebrations continued at a trophy parade in the city centre. And not even a huge thunderstorm could take this momentous occasion away from the thousands of devoted fans who braved the weather[19] to line the streets of the city centre – as the team were paraded along Deansgate[20] in an open-top bus.

June 26 – Kathleen Kirby killed after police chase ends in crash

Kathleen Kirby died after a police chase ended in a crash in Wigan

Kathleen Kirby was killed in Wigan on June 26. She was walking along the pavement with Cliff Bullen, her partner of more than 20 years.

They were making their way home after a visit to a nature reserve. Chad Rimmington, 32, was fleeing from police ‘at great speed’ in an Audi TT after they tried to pull him over. He reached speeds of up to 78mph in a 30mph zone, on a Monday afternoon in a built-up area.

Rimmington crashed into an innocent Amazon delivery van, with the vehicle then spinning out of control and hitting 66-year-old Ms Kirby. She was killed and Mr Bullen narrowly avoided a similar fate. After the horror crash, Rimmington was pulled from the car and arrested.

He told officers at the scene: “I’ve killed someone, I’m so sorry. I deserve to die.” But when he was questioned following the incident, he refused to watch CCTV footage of the crash and told police they should ‘work it out for themselves’.

Chad Rimmington

He told officers of his driving: “It was only dangerous as soon as the officer started chasing me.” Tests revealed that Rimmington was more than three times over the drug drive limit for cocaine. Rimmington was sentenced to ten years and eight months in prison.

July 20 – Awaab’s law becomes a reality

Awaab IshakAwaab Ishak

Two-year-old Awaab Ishak died in December 2020 following prolonged exposure to mould at a Rochdale[21] social flat.

Social landlord Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH) failed to repair mould at his family’s home on Freehold for several months, the toddler’s inquest heard. The M.E.N. discovered tenants were still suffering with widespread issues of damp and mould on the estate 18 months on from his death – including families with children who had breathing difficulties. We launched a campaign and in July, Awaab’s Law was officially rubber-stamped on the statute book by the King.

The Social Housing (Regulation) Bill received Royal Assent to become an Act of Parliament. It includes changes to the law in memory of Awaab following an amendment to the bill. It will see social landlords face strict timeframes to inspect and repair damp and mould.

Those which fail to meet the deadlines risk prosecution.

August 22 – Dogowner Donald Patience found dead at home after labradoodle went missing

Donald Prentice PatienceDonald Prentice Patience

Police were called out to Donald Patience’s home in response to sightings that his white labradoodle was being stolen. Mr Patience, 45, was discovered as police searched the end terrace property in Ainsworth Road, Radcliffe[22], on the morning of August 22. Ian Connell, 39, from Duke Street, Bolton, appeared at Manchester Crown Court on November 10 where he pleaded not guilty to the murder of Mr Patience.

He also denied his manslaughter. Connell was further remanded in custody ahead of a pre-trial review on January 15. A trial date was provisionally set for February 12.

Following his death, the family of Mr Patience, who was affectionately known as Prentice, described him as a ‘much-loved son, brother and father.’ The labradoodle was recovered into the care of the relevant authority, police said.

August 23 – Former couple found guilty of murdering ‘dearly loved’ Liam Smith as dad is shot dead and doused in acid

Michael Hillier, top left, Rachel Fulstow; and Liam Smith, bottom

A couple acted as ‘judge, jury and executioner’ after they decided to ‘exact vengeance’ on the woman’s former partner.. Michael Hillier and Rachel Fulstow were both found guilty of the murder of dad-of-two Liam Smith, 38, following a six-week trial at Minshull Street Crown Court. Fulstow, 37, was also found guilty of perverting the course of justice.

In August, Judge Maurice Greene told Hillier and Fulstow they ‘showed no remorse’ following the murder. Both were handed life sentences, with Hillier ordered to serve a minimum of 33 years behind bars and Fulstow a minimum of 30. Before Judge Greene sentenced the pair, a member of the public gallery shouted: “Kill yourself” and “Liam will be waiting for you” at the couple, while shouts of ‘scum’ could be heard in the courtroom.

As he was being led from the court, Hillier shouted back to the family of Liam Smith: “Your boy’s a rapist”, leading to a number of people shouting ‘evil’, ‘you should hang from a noose’ and ‘evil b***h’. Mr Smith’s sister also responded: “You don’t meet a rapist for dinner the next day.” Hillier shot electrician Mr Smith in the face yards from his home in Wigan, before throwing sulphuric acid over his body.

Hillier, 39, said he was acting in revenge after his girlfriend Fulstow alleged that she’d been raped by Liam years earlier during a Tinder date. Following the murder, the couple enacted an elaborate plan to avoid justice that involved false alibis and a burnt out car. Days later, after the killing, they went on a two-week trip to Jamaica.

But when they returned home, the net began to close and both were eventually arrested.

No pleas were entered. In October this year a 14-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded not guilty to murder. He previously pleaded guilty to an offence of having an article with a blade or point, namely a knife.

After his death, Nathaniel’s family paid tribute to him. They said: “Nathaniel was a best friend to many, he never failed to make people laugh. Nathaniel was very kind, caring and always thinking of others.

“He was polite and the most loving person. He would always put other people first without a thought. He was an amazing brother and son to his parents and siblings.

“Our hearts are left broken. Rest in Paradise to the most kindest soul.”

October 16 – Almena Amica killed after a bus crashed into a shop in Piccadilly Gardens

Almena Amica, 77, who died in the Piccadilly Gardens bus crashAlmena Amica, 77, who died in the Piccadilly Gardens bus crash

On October 16, a Diamond bus ploughed into a bubble tea shop beside Piccadilly Gardens[26] leaving 12 people injured. Crowds of horrified onlookers watched on as the awful scene unfolded in the heart of the city. Witnesses told the Manchester Evening News they had ‘never seen anything like it’, with one adding it was ‘one of the most horrible scenes I’ve witnessed’.

The shock turned to grief the following day when it was announced 77-year-old Almena Amica had tragically died from her injuries. She was described by her family as a ‘well loved matriarch’ whose presence will be hugely missed. A 64-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He was bailed. In a statement issued at the time, a spokesperson for Diamond Bus North West said: “On October 16, 2023, one of our Diamond Bus North West vehicles was involved in a serious incident in Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester. “Our priorities are the driver, passengers and pedestrians involved.

We are cooperating with the police and emergency services. We do not have any further details we can share at this time.” In a statement, Ian Wood at T4 UK Franchise Ltd said all staff in the store were ‘okay’ but ‘shaken up’ and wished those injured in the crash a ‘speedy recovery’.

October 25 – Coroner rules Yousef Makki was unlawfully killed by his friend Joshua Molnar

Yousef Makki and Joshua Molnar

In October, more than four years on from his death – a coroner concluded that Yousef Makki was unlawfully killed.

The 17-year-old Manchester Grammar School pupil died after being stabbed in the heart by his schoolfriend Joshua Molnar in Hale[27] Barns on March 2, 2019. After a criminal trial at Manchester Crown Court[28] in July 2019, Molnar, now 22, was cleared of murder and manslaughter. He told the jury he acted in self-defence after Yousef, from Burnage, pulled a blade on him first and ‘came on’ to his knife, during a row.

Another friend who was involved in the commotion, Adam Chowdhary, was acquitted after the trial of perverting the course of justice. Following the conclusion of the trial, an inquest into Yousef’s death was held in November 2021. A coroner, Alison Mutch, concluded she could not be sure what happened but said she could not, on the balance of probabilities, conclude his death was unlawful killing, accidental death, misadventure or even an open verdict.

Ms Mutch formerly recorded a narrative conclusion. She said that Yousef died from ‘complications from a stab wound the precise circumstances of which cannot, on the balance of probabilities, be ascertained’. After a campaign by Yousef’s sister, Jade Akoum, the High Court later quashed the findings and ordered a second inquest with a new coroner.

On October 25, that inquest concluded. In a lengthy ruling, coroner Geraint Williams concluded that Yousef did not have a knife at the time of his death as claimed, and Molnar had not acted in self-defence. Mr Williams said he did not believe he needed to use a knife to defend himself and that Molnar’s actions amounted to manslaughter.

Mr Williams said: “I find as a fact Yousef Makki did not use a knife to threaten or attack Joshua Molnar. I also find use of a knife unnecessary, disproportionate and unreasonable. “I conclude he did not act in lawful self-defence.

Therefore, I conclude that Mr Makki was unlawfully killed is fully made out by the evidence.” The case was considered again by Greater Manchester Police[29] and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) following the second inquest. But in November, Yousef’s family were told there was not enough evidence to trigger the case being reopened.

“I think we knew that they were going to say that there’s not enough evidence,” Jade Akoum, Yousef’s sister, told the Manchester Evening News after the decision. “But it’s still disappointing. We still feel like nobody has been held accountable. Nobody has been punished for Yousef’s death.”

She added: “It’s a form of justice but it’s not proper justice, is it? Because his killer is out there.”

October 25 – Badri Issa stabbed to death in Moss Side

Badri Issa was stabbed to death on Moss Lane East in Moss Side

Police were called to Moss Lane East in Moss Side[30] on October 25 to reports of a stabbing. University graduate Badri Issa tragically died in hospital.

He was respectful and lovely and always put others first. “Badri had just graduated university and was looking forward to starting a career in mechanical engineering. He was kind and friendly and always smiling.

“He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.”

October 30 – Caroline Gore found dead in Wigan

Caroline Gore

Police officers were called to a tower block in Wigan[32] on October 30. Caroline Gore, 44, was tragically found dead inside Douglas House. A murder probe was launched and David Liptrot, 56, of Shelley Avenue, Coppull, Lancashire, was charged with her murder.

He was remanded into custody after appearing at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on November 3. Following her death, Ms Gore’s family said: “We as a family are heartbroken and saddened at the loss of Caroline Gore. A dearly loved mum, daughter and sister has been tragically taken way too soon.

“At this time we as a family ask for privacy and show respect for Caroline and her memory. We ask that members of the public allow the police to conduct the investigation into the passing of Caroline and that any information is passed to them.”

The Chanel show in Manchester’s Northern Quarter

Chanel’s exclusive Metiers d’Art event was held in the Northern Quarter on December 7. A specially-built canopy – which was nicknamed the ‘Chanel Tunnel’ – was erected in Thomas Street where 600 guests – including movie stars Hugh Grant, Tilda Swinton[33] and Kirsten Stewart – watched models parade a special collection of clothes from the company.

Businesses in the area were paid handsomely to stay shut during the event as well as for the disruption caused in the build up to it. The show saw celebrities stay in the city’s top hotels to attend the luxury fashion brand’s outdoor catwalk before heading to Victoria Baths for an after party.

December 23 – Parent and son killed in crash in Oldham

Clair (left) and son Sam tragically passed away

Clair, 42, and son Sam, 15, suffered catastrophic injuries following a crash on Ripponden Road in Oldham[34] on December 23. Emergency crews rushed to the scene but tragically, they both died.

Another child – aged 13 – was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after the two-car crash. A 35-year-old man – the driver and sole occupant of the other vehicle, a BMW – was arrested on the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has since been released on bail, police said in the latest update.

Following their deaths, Clair and Sam’s family paid a touching tribute to them. Clair has been remembered as a ‘smart and loving parent, daughter and sister’ who would ‘do anything for anyone.’ Teenage son Sam was in his last year of school and hoped of studying music in college. Paying tribute, their family said in a statement: “Clair was a smart, loving parent, daughter and sister who would do anything for anyone.

Prior to the pandemic, Clair worked at the Bolton Theatre, supporting those facing Mental Health challenges. “She loved going to pottery class every week and was such a creative person and she could go from a lump of clay to making whatever she put her mind to. “Sam was in Year 11, looking forward to studying music at college; he loved to sing and to play the drums.

Listening to music was one of Sam’s favourite things to do, he was always around the house with his headphones on. “When Sam wasn’t listening to music, he could be found in a world of his own playing on his computer. Sam’s family meant the world to him; he was a brother and son whose loss will leave a hole in our family forever. Christmas[35] without Sam and Clair will be immensely difficult not only for us, but for everybody that knew them both.”
