Three charged over alleged Wear-Tyne Derby crimes
Three men have been charged with crimes, including indecent chanting, after the Wear-Tyne Derby. Newcastle United played Sunderland[1] AFC met for the first time in eight years at the Stadium of Light on Saturday. And despite being known as one of the tensest games in English football police say the match, which Newcastle won 3-0, passed without major incident.
However, nine people were arrested in relation to the match, Northumbria Police[2] say. And now three have been charged with offences. Carl Kenneth Parker, 52, of Park Grove, Shiremoor, is accused of indecent chanting and is due to appear at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court later this month.
Callum Douglas Wood, 20, of Grangeburn Close, Tweedmouth, has been charged with common assault and is due at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court next month.

And Thomas David Allan, 38, of Hendon Valley Road, Sunderland, appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court yesterday. His case was sent to Newcastle Crown Court where he will appear next month to face charges of assaulting an emergency worker and being drunk and disorderly. A 17-year-old held on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly has been referred to a youth triage programme, a 25-year-old male arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled drug received a police caution, while a 25-year-old male arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly has been referred for consideration of an out of court resolution. Two of the men arrested were released and will face no further action.
These arrests were for possession of alcohol in a sporting ground and possession of a pyrotechnic in a sporting ground. And 28 year-old man held on suspicion of common assault and has been released on police bail. A Northumbria Police[3] spokeswoman said officers wanted to thank the majority of fans for their good behaviour.
“The event passed largely without incident, with the overwhelming majority of both home and away fans behaving respectfully and appropriately,” she said. “We would like to thank everyone involved in what was an extremely successful operation, including both sets of fans, both clubs, partners across the region, officers which supported us from other forces, and, of course, our own officers, staff and volunteers.” However, police said they were still keen to hear from anyone with information about any other crimes related to the game.
The spokeswoman added: “We will continue to review any further reports from the event to establish if further criminal offences have taken place, and take robust action where required.
Anyone with further information, or who would like to make a report, is asked to get.”
Anyone with information should call Northumbria Police on 101 quoting log NP-20240106-0191.
