Thug dragged girlfriend back into house and strangled her as she tried to leave

A convicted arsonist dragged a woman inside her house and strangled her[1] after she told him she did not want to be with him anymore. Georgie Greechan, 27, had been in a relationship with a woman for around three-and-a-half years when she told him she no longer wanted to be with him after noticing a change in his behaviour. Leeds Crown Court[2] heard on Wednesday that the following day – October 5 last year – the woman asked Greechan, of Barden Terrace, Armley – to leave.

Prosecutor Ella Embleton said: “He refused. At this point, she started to leave the address but as she did, he grabbed her arm and pulled her back into the house. She tried to pull away from him but he dragged her into the living room.

The defendant proceeded to violently attack her, threw her to the sofa and punched her to the sofa several times.” Greechan – who shares a child with the woman – then climbed on top of her and strangled her, leaving her “unable to breathe” and “feeling dizzy.” Ms Embleton continued: “She was able to free herself and run upstairs to get away from him to call her sister.

She was able to leave the address and call the police. That night she got a number of phone calls and texts from him. This constant tirade of messages continued until the 7th of October.

He was arrested on the 2nd of November and was interviewed the next day.” The court[4] was told that Greechan had eight previous convictions for 10 offences including assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and arson. YorkshireLive reported in July 2021 t[5]hat Greechan had been jailed for 42 months after he set fire to GBP41,000 worth of cars held in a police lock-up awaiting forensic analysis in a bid to cover up another crime. The offence had taken place on March 22, 2018.

Ms Embleton said Greechan was on licence for this offence at the time he committed the assault occasioning actual bodily harm and intentional strangulation against his partner. He admitted those offences at a plea, trial and preparation hearing at the Crown court, but had indicated the pleas at the first hearing before magistrates. Mitigating, Craig Sutcliffe, said no pre-sentence report had been prepared as Greechan had not known of an appointment with the probation service and had gone about his daily activities in custody, including attending the gym.

He said: “The best point I make is his guilty plea…” Mr Sutcliffe said the offences took place “over a very short period of time” and said Greechan is trusted in the prison environment and is already classed as an enhanced prisoner.

He added: “He has expressed his remorse for how he behaved on this particular day and you may take into account that she has made it clear this was an isolated incident.” His Honour Judge Clark jailed Greechan for 14 months and told him he would be the subject of a restraining order for the next ten years.
