Traffic updates for M1, M62 and A1 as crashes cause chaos in treacherous ice and frost across Yorkshire
Treacherous weather conditions have been causing chaos on the roads in Yorkshire this morning (Weds) as a yellow weather[1] warning for ice and snow is issued. A yellow weather warning for snow and ice is in place for much of the county with some parts of Yorkshire covered by a warning up until midnight on Thursday. The region has already seen some travel disruption with drivers being urged to plan ahead and prepare for cold and treacherous weather[2] amid the snowfall yesterday.
And, today has been no different with crashes and severe delays reported on some of Yorkshire’s busiest roads today. National Highways is currently reporting up to 90-minute delays on the M62[4] following a multi-vehicle crash. It has forced the closure of one lane westbound near J22 A672 (Rishworth Moor) and traffic gridlock is spanning past Junction 24 at Ainley Top.
The ice and frost is compounding the situation making it harder for emergency services to deal with the scene. On the other side of the motorway, a crash is causing large queues from J25 A644 Wakefield Road (Brighouse) to J26 M606 J1 (Chain Bar) eastbound.
On the M1 there is queueing traffic due to earlier accident on M1 Northbound from J41 A650 (Carrgate) to J42 M62 J29 (Lofthouse), although all lanes have now been re-opened. There are some delays on the A1(M) Northbound, one lane closed on exit slip road.
However, this is due to broken down car at J46 B1224 Racecourse Approach (Wetherby). Traffic is coping well. Roads in North Yorkshire have been particularly bad in some higher areas of the Moors and Dales, pictures have showed snow drifts and impassable roads as snow continues to fall. Some bus services have also been affected with services in Keighley suspended on Wednesday morning due to the icy weather conditions. Keighley Bus Company said the K1, K6, and 72 have been affected so far. There is likely to be delays to public transport services throughout the day.
Met Office has warned of widespread ice and severe frost as a yellow weather warning remains in place, the forecast for today (January 17) said: “Crisp and very cold, with sunshine but also widespread ice and severe frost that may persist in places. A developing breeze perhaps bringing isolated wintry flurries to coastal districts later. Maximum temperature 1C.”
Huddersfield weatherman Paul Stevens also warned temperatures could drop to -10C[6] in Yorkshire, meaning more disruption is possible as conditions worsen. This comes as Met Office has reported that last night was the ‘coldest night of winter so far’ as temperatures dropped to -14C in some parts of the UK.
