Tragic teenager who died in horror M62 crash was passenger in car which ‘lost control,’ inquest hears
An inquest into the death of a teenager after a car crash[1] on the M62[2] motorway has been opened by a coroner. Adnan Malek was 19, single and worked as a barista, the coroner was told. The brief hearing, at Rochdale[3] Coroners’ Court on Wednesday, was told Adnan was a passenger in a car that ‘lost control’ between junctions 21 and 22, for Milnrow[4], Rochdale, and Saddleworth[5], Oldham[6], at around 10.30pm on Thursday, December 21.
The vehicle then hit a central reservation barrier and ended up on the opposite side of the motorway. Adnan was sadly pronounced dead at the scene, coroner Joanne Kearsley was told, and was later formerly identified by a close friend. The teenager lived on Trinity Road in the Aston area of Birmingham and no family were present at the hearing. The inquest opening came after Adnan’s family paid touching tribute to him in a statement[8] released by police. They revealed the crash happened just days after his 19th birthday and said: “It is with a heavy heart and great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved brother, Adnan Malek.
“Ten days after turning 19, he was taken away from this world, the very world which lit up with his charismatic smile and melted with the kindness of his heart. A loving brother, son, uncle and friend to many, we will hold him in memory forever.

“Those that were fortunate enough to know him knew how much he would go out of his way for others. Keeping that in mind, we as his family, have decided to fundraise for charity in his name through Ummah Welfare Trust.”
Giving evidence at the hearing, police coroners’ officer Emma Campbell said the collision was the subject of an ongoing investigation by Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, but no update on its progress was given. Coroner Ms Kearsley was told the driver of the car, a grey Vauxhall Astra, was arrested and the investigation ‘may take some time’. In an update at the time, GMP said the driver – another 19 year-old man – suffered minor injuries, while another passenger escaped uninjured.
Later, the driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has since been released under investigation. A post-mortem examination has been carried out, the hearing was told, but an ‘unascertained’ cause of death has been given pending further specialist investigations.
Ms Kearsley adjourned the inquest until a review hearing on March 25.
No further details were given.
