Two A34 crashes cause delays as route into Oxford blocked
At around 10am, traffic started to build on the road following a crash between two cars between Botley Interchange and Peartree Interchange on the northbound carriageway. A lane closed due to the accident in which a traffic officer unit attended as congestion built on the routes around the area including the A420 and A44 Woodstock Road. There were delays reported of 45 minutes following the incident and six and a half miles of congestion.
After the lane reopened there were still three miles of congestion built up. Just under two hours later, two lorries were involved in a crash on the southbound carriageway between the same two interchanges. This caused the road to become partially blocked with drivers being told to “find an alternative route to avoid delays”.
All lanes were reopened just before 2pm as traffic returned to normal. This happened as elsewhere in Oxford, a main road into the city centre remains closed during this morning’s rush hour traffic due to flooding issues. Local authorities confirmed that Abingdon Road would stay closed in both directions following its closure over the weekend.
The road was closed on Saturday (January 6) after flood water spread despite fire crews using a high-volume pump to clear excess water from the road’s surface throughout the day and night.
