Two arrested after vandals chop speed cameras in Cornwall

2 What’s being described as ‘mindless vandalism’ to two speed cameras[1] has prompted Cornwall council and police to issue a joint statement. Officers were called at 3.10am on Wednesday January 3 to a report that a static speed camera[2] on Tregolls Road, Truro, had been cut down.
Soon after, a second incident was identified in the nearby village of Perranarworthal. According to local news sources, this was the second time this camera had been targeted.
Following the incident, Devon and Cornwall police confirmed two arrests have been made. Two men in their thirties are currently being held in custody, having been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.
“We are really disappointed to see yet more mindless vandalism targeted at safety cameras in Cornwall,” the statement read. “These devices were installed at the wishes of the local community to improve road safety in areas which had previously experienced high speeds and several serious and fatal collisions. While these cameras are inactive, these communities no longer have the protection they were once afforded, which is really saddening,” continues the statement.
The authorities are looking to replace the cameras as soon as possible – questioning the motive of the vandals and pointing out that the cost of new equipment would be footed by the taxpayer.
Police Inspector Tim Evans added: “We are investigating these crimes and continue to urge the community to report any suspicious activity or share information that might help our enquiries.”
