Two people and a dog had to be rescued from their vehicle after it crashed down a bank on Saturday night.

Emergency service were called to the scene on Pahiatua Aokautere Rd at 8.50pm.

A police spokesperson said due to the location of the crash, the scene was not “immediately visible” from the road.

“The 111 call taker and attending units worked with the witness, who lives near the crash scene, to locate the vehicle.”

The car had gone off the road between Harrison Hill and South Range Rd.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand central shift manager Murray Dunbar said two people had been injured and needed help getting up the bank.

Crews from Pahiatua and Palmerston North, and police, helped to retrieve one person from the vehicle, while the other person was winched out by a helicopter, Dunbar said.

Both were taken to Palmerston North Hospital with moderate to serious injuries, the police spokesperson said.

The car also had a dog inside it, who was rescued too.

The spokesperson said the dog was reported to be okay.
