Update on man crushed in port accident as investigation launched
Peel Ports have provided an update on the condition of a man who was rushed to hospital after being crushed between two shipping containers. At around midday on Saturday, January 13, the crew member was found trapped by the legs at Peel Ports in Seaforth[1]. The casualty, who was discovered by rescue teams conscious and breathing and was released using hydraulic equipment and airbags, received emergency medical attention.
Merseyside Police, Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service and North West Ambulance Service all attended the scene.
Peel Ports said this evening the crew member is now said to be stable and receiving treatment in hospital, while an investigation will be launched following the incident. A spokesperson for Peel Ports said: "An incident occurred onboard a vessel berthed at the Port of Liverpool on Saturday 13 January, in which a third-party crew member was injured.
The emergency services attended the scene and the crew member, who is in a stable position, is currently being treated in hospital. "Our thoughts are with the person involved and their family, as well as ensuring the welfare of the team who were present when the incident occurred. We would like to sincerely thank the team, and the emergency services, for their speedy and professional response.
"A thorough investigation led by the flagged State of the vessel, in conjunction with the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) will follow, and our role as the port and statutory harbour authority will be to ensure full co-operation throughout."
