Vigilantes chase ‘cow smugglers’ for 12kms on KMP highway in Gurgaon

A group of cow vigilantes chased alleged cow smugglers for 12 kms after they received a tip-off that a group of men were transporting cows for slaughter to Mewat in the early hours of Friday. Videos of the incident show a group of vigilantes chasing a pick-up truck from Pachgaon Chowk on KMP Highway and eventually the cows are disposed of on the road as the vigilantes close in on them. According to Abhishek Gaur, who was among the raiding team, they received a tip-off around 11 pm on Thursday that cows were being smuggled from Kundli to Mewat and Rajasthan after which they set up their "checkpoint".

An FIR[1] was registered at Bilaspur[2] police station on the complaint of a cow vigilante against the cow smugglers. Gaur said that police were also a part of the raiding party, but they cannot be seen in the videos of the incident. The FIR stated that the driver of the pick-up, Jafar, was injured and taken to hospital.

"On 5/01/2024, at around 03:30 am, our team was present near KMP highway, Pukhrapur village.

Upon this information, our team initiated checks near the KMP toll. However, the pickup driver, driving recklessly, attempted to escape after throwing the animals off the vehicle. The truck collided with a divider due to the driver's rash driving, causing it to halt.

Inside the vehicle, there were 4-5 cattle, with one bull appearing critically injured. The driver, Jafar, son of Sakir from Kharkhadi, was injured in the accident and taken to the hospital. It is suspected that Jafar intended to transport these animals to Rajasthan for illegal slaughter.

Subsequently, the police were informed. They arrived at the scene, and we provided our complaint to SI May, detailing the incident," the complaint said. Meanwhile, police said they were informed by an ERV and they rushed to the spot. "Information was received that a vehicle has been caught by the cow protection group in the vicinity of KMP toll plaza in the village of Pukhrapur.

Upon arrival, the ERV staff was present.

Arjun from the aforementioned group lodged a complaint with SI May.

Upon studying the complaint, offenses under IPC sections 279, 336, and 11-59-60 of the Animal Cruelty Act, and section 13 (i) (ii) of the Haryana Gauvansh and Gausamrakshan Act 2015 were found to have occurred and an FIR was registered," the FIR said.
